Sinks clog. It’s just what they do! In an effort to prevent clogging, avoid rinsing clog-inducing materials down the drain such as hair, oil, or food byproducts. If you do find yourself with a clog, what should you do? In some cases, sink clogs require the assistance of a professional.
At Rootn Tootn Drain Cleaning Service we’ve got the tools and know-how to remove even the stubbornest clogs.
In other instances, you may be able to remove the clog yourself. Here are three things to try before you call in a plumber.
- Plunger
Yes, plungers work on sinks too! A common household plunger isn’t just a tool for unclogging backed up toilets, it’s useful for any kind of clog. Before plunging, place the mouth of the plunger over the entire opening of the sink; the goal is to create tightly-sealed suction. Hold on to the handle and plunge the plunger 6-10 times in rapid succession. Didn’t work? Reseal and try again a few more times. Be careful of water! Plungers can cause a sudden rush of water that might splash back. - Baking Soda + Salt
Although you might be tempted to reach for a bottle of Super Strong Ultra-Fast Drain Cleaner…don’t! Drain cleaners contain hazardous chemicals that are bad for the environment and terrible for your pipes. Instead, try a natural solution. Mix one cup of plain baking soda with ½ a cup of salt. Pour down the drain and allow to sit for a few hours or even overnight. Flush the drain with at least 2 cups of boiling hot water. This method works particularly well for gradual clogs like hairballs and grease buildup. - Coat Hanger
What can you try if you know there’s an object or objects clogging the sink? Grab a traditional metal coat hanger and unbend it. Use the straightest end to “snake” down the drain and try to push the clog through. It may take a few tries to get the leverage you’re looking for and you might want to run the water slightly while you work (unless the sink won’t drain at all.)
